6. Setting up your own wiki
6.1 Wiki Varieties

6.2 Wikis used in this workshop:

  • Tiddlywiki This one is really fast, small, and local.
  • PB wiki Hosted, free, easy modest capabilities.
  • PM wiki Free, flexible, portable, multimedia capable.

6.3 Add Ons included in this installation:

6.4 Installing pmwiki

6.4.1 On a server someplace, as you watch. //Copy the entire folder over to a Apache type server, and it will run pretty much most of the time. Go to here and watch the install. (At first it will not be there; then after simply moving the folder, it will be available; same PW's, images, and more.)

6.4.2 On the Mac, basic instructions.
Turn web sharing on through the System Preferences panel (Apple > System Preferences, Sharing).
Turn on PHP on your Mac. (This is the tough part, but pretty simple compared to a Windows machine.)
Copy pmwiki folder from CD to Library/Webserver/Documents folder. View your wiki at http://127.0.0.1/pmwiki/. Some screenshots and comments

6.4.3 Installing on a Windows, basic instructions
a. Use Apache installer to put on your local machine.
b. Copy httpd.conf file from CD to Apache:conf folder
c. Copy the entire php folder from CD to the main level of C drive.
d. Put a copy of php.ini in Windows folder.
e. Use Scheduled Tasks in the control panel to start up PHP and Apache, or make shortcuts of each and move to desk top. They are at: Program Files: Apache Group: Apache2: bin: Apache.exe and php: php.exe
f. Copy the pmwiki folder to Program Files: Apache Group: Apache2: htdocs: Make a shortcut of this folder and move to the desk top as well.

Screenshots of the Windows process. See folders on CD for further installation instructions. View your wiki at http://localhost/pmwiki/

Other wiki workshop activities:
1. Brainstorm wiki: how would you use a wiki in your classroom or organization? What's the wierdest thing you could think of; start in groups and then post an individual response to this wiki. (This way, of course, the workshop builds on itself...doing a wiki with a wiki philosophy.)(Try color, different font, adding a page in a wiki)

2. Autobiographical WIKI and page editing: write about your favorite hobby, find an image that supports it and post…respond to someone else…(click on edit, and edit concur or add to their post…

3. Collaborative editorial (View WIKITORIAL) Divide into groups, add to the page topics below:

  • How is elearning better than face to face? eLearningBetter
  • Where is the promise of elearning? PromiseElearning
  • Is elearning for everyone? EveryoneElearning
  • What are the barriers to elearning? BarrierstoElearning
  • Why collaborate in education and learning? CollaborationinEducation
